Barbara Baynton was an Australian novelist and short-story writer. Her work is notable for its rejection of Australian nationalism and the Australian bush, especially tales of women struggling to cope with the harsh realities of bush life. For many years, the date of her birth and the identities of her parents were uncertain, because Baynton altered her birth date and disguised her parents’ identities.
She claimed to have been born in , to Penelope Ewart and Captain Robert Kilpatrick, who were supposedly Irish immigrants to Australia and fell in love on the ship en route to Australia. Although Penelope Ewart was supposedly married at the time, she began a relationship with Kilpatrick and later married him when her husband died. This story, which was believed even by Baynton’s own grandchildren, was later proven false.
Her parents’ names were John Lawrence and Elizabeth Ewart. Baynton was born Barbara Lawrence, not Barbara Kilpatrick, and her father was a carpenter, not the rich landowner she claimed him to be. In particular, her motives for saying that her parents were not married when they began their relationship are especially difficult to understand, especially since she lived in an era when unmarried relationships were considered scandalous.
The authors speculated that Baynton and her social circle may have found the story romantic, or that she preferred people to think that her father was wealthy. Contemporary Authors Online quotes Baynton’s grandson, H.

Elvis was singing in the men’s room. But I’d gotten used to that. This time, though, there was something new. And it led me, after all these years, to the legendary Barbara Hearn. A little explanation — all right, a lot of explanation — is in order:. There’s a restaurant in Naples, Florida, called BrickTop’s. I stop in there occasionally when I’m in town.
In the men’s restroom, every time I’ve gone in, Elvis Presley’s voice is singing. Oddly, his voice is not heard out in the restaurant itself. But in the restroom, the voice is there nonstop. The other night I was eating at the restaurant and, of course, Elvis was singing in the men’s room.

Australian charities watchdog is looking into numerous complaints about the Misty Mountain Health Retreat. She has been permanently barred from providing any health services either voluntarily or in a paid capacity, including giving lectures. As an Acnc-registered health promotion charity, Misty Mountain Health Retreat receives government grants and various tax concessions.
Its most recent financial report states that the charity operates live-in health centres in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people with chronic and terminal illnesses receive diet, exercise and health advice. The party is anti-vaccination and is sceptical of conventional, evidence-based medicine.
As examples of activities that align with this definition, the Acnc lists raising public awareness of a disease, undertaking medical research, developing or providing aids or equipment, and providing clients and carers with evidence-based health education. The Misty Mountain Health Retreat does not appear to engage in any of those activities. At one point, the charity also offered clients helicopter rides.
